Do you Know the address of the paradise? For Raymond and Simon, two become schoolboys
of the inseparable friends, the paradise - the garden of the dreams, the cathedral of the dreams,
the de luxe hotel of childhood, - it was Vel' d' Hiv', the cycle-racing track of Winter, with the
angle of the boulevard of Grenelle and the street Nelaton, in the 15th district.
Simon, son of a Jewish doctor, and Raymond, son of the caretaker of the cycle-racing track,
knew of them all the recesses, all the secrecies and all the legends, all mythologies.
Because, in the carefree years 1930, Vel' d' Hiv' was the temple of cycling on track and boxing.
The Six Days and of great pugilistic meetings proceeded there, without forgetting the meetings
of the Popular front. Outside the track out of wooden, there were the popular steps and, inside,
the restaurant with the mode, where the people were found, like one says now.
On a side, All-Paname and, other, All-Paris, in which demi-mondaines threw to the runners
of the bouquets of violets. Vel' d' Hiv' proved that Paris was a festival.
“That do you make this evening?” one asked. Answer “I go in Grenelle.” Then,
July 16th and 17th, 1942, it was the great raid. Accomplice of the Nazis, the French
police stopped thousands of Jews, which were gathered with the cycle-racing track of Winter.
The appointment of all the festivities became the place of the tragedy.
The hell after the paradise. Raymond saw Simon and his father for the last time, before they
disappear in crowd, to be taken along towards the “Large one Nowhere”. Vel' d' Hiv' tells
the destiny of two children, two friends, carried in the storm of the history and separated one
from the other, whereas they were believed inseparable. A novel been useful by a limpid and
light writing. Biography of the author Francois Brott directed Le Monde of the books a long time.
He is the author of about thirty works, among which literary novels and tests, in particular
the Young Lady of the Lights (Gallimard, 1997), On planet of the feelings (seek-midday, 1998),
Radiguet, the child with a cane (Folio, 2003), extreme Femmes (seek-midday, 2003) and Women
of pleasure (seek-midday, 2007).
